Debit cards eliminate the need to carry cash or physical checks to make purchases. But at the same time for hackers and thieves, your debit card is an easy target. Protect your hard-earned money by using these safety tips.

  1. Never share your PIN with anyone and don’t write down your debit PIN anywhere. Instead, memorize it.
  2. Ensure that no one sees your PIN while using your debit card.
  3. Never allow a stranger to assist you while using an ATM.
  4. Use your card with merchants that you know and can trust. Never allow the shopkeeper to take your card to a different shop/room for swiping it.
  5. Change debit card PIN frequently. Changing your pin frequently makes it difficult for fraudsters to determine your PIN, making you less vulnerable to debit card information theft. A good rule of thumb is to change your PIN every three to six months.
  6. Sign up for two-factor authentication with your bank. On enabling this feature, you usually get an OTP on your phone or email to verify your identity every time you initiate a transaction.
  7. Sign up for mobile alerts. These are delivered every time there is an account activity, specifying the amount transferred, how it was transferred and when the transfer occurred. Hence, you can identify unusual card activity right away and report your card to the bank.

Summary:

Debit cards can sometimes be vulnerable to fraud. After all, with modern technology at our fingertips, it’s easier than ever to access sensitive information. However, there’s no reason to worry. Just follow the above tips to increase the security of your debit card transaction.
